One of my most ill-fated deliveies started when an owner decided to install an air conditioner into the aft lazarette by drilling holes through a watertight bulkhead. When heavy seas off Mexico flooded that compartment through leaking seals, the water passed straight into the boat. The problem became obvious when the galley floorboards started floating. We crossed Atlantic ocean (Tenerife - St. Martin) in 17,5 days. Distance traveled - 3016nm, avg. SOG - 7,2kn, max. SOG - 22,1kn (surfing down the big wave :D) often going 12-15kn SOG down those Atlantic waves.
