The first test of our Dyneema loops that replace metal chainplates as part of our full Dyneema Standing rigging project within the full refit of our 1977 Rival 38. We are refitting our Rival 38 for a Sustainable Sailing retirement in a few years. Two years ago, when we bought Vida she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings. We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all electric (motor, cooking etc). Now that the inside is dry (thanks to new windows, new hatches and leak chasing) we are fitting her out for live-aboard world cruising. That includes no fossil fuels, updating the rig and deck plus much more. How to save someone that goes overboard and you’ve got both sails up? Without tacking or jibing, you go into a broad reach, bring the sails in tight, and heave-to. The sheets stay as they were. You’re effectively putting the sails over to the wrong side of the boat. By doing this you put the boat in position for the casualty to drift towards the boat and you also stop forward motion. With the engine, you then go forward and backward lining up the casualty along the beam of the boat…waiting for the person to drift down. Have you ever done this kind of MOB procedure?
