On the other hand, the atmosphere both on and off the water has never been better. The trade winds, in fine form at between 20 and 25 knots, undoubtedly had something to do with it... The five entrants in CSA 1 enjoyed superb courses towards Saba, Saint-Barts and Anguilla. The HH66 Lee Overlay Partners (ex Nemo) put on a great show, impressively flying a hull and, above all, peak speeds pushing 30 knots. The Gunboat 72 Layla was not to be outdone, with her GPS recording a top speed of 24.5 knots. The La Grande-Motte shipyard's first flybridge catamaran won the overall race on corrected time. The Diam 24 fleet was of course severely tested by the choppy conditions, but there too, they put on quite a show. In this fury of spray and exciting runs, the crew of Anomaly came out on top, leaving their rivals with no chance of a rematch. For the past two years, the CMC has been running a second division called Rally. This year, the 9 participants were accompanied - and looked after - by our Marketing Director Gwen Dorning. After sailing 32,500 nautical miles around the world I want to give a shout out to my two loyal and exceptional crew members. They never talk back to me, require feeding or fall asleep on watch. In a perfect world they would make cups of tea and wash the dishes but I can't complain. The Aries windvane has kept Fathom on course in all sorts of conditions from 5knots of wind to 50knots of wind, flat seas to tumbling waves, upwind and downwind. I couldn't have got this far without it and have spent many hours watching it do its business without complaint using no electricity and only the power of the wind, a truly fantastic piece of engineering. Secondly the Aquair 100 tow gen. The generator is mounted on the pushpit and the forward motion of the boat spins a metal propeller at the end of 20m of rope. In winds over 15kts the drag created is unimportant and in tandem with the solar panel it keeps the batteries full and the fridge going 24/7. Cheers to both!
