The fleet is in the luxurious Lake Como, Italy in some of the most scenic and serene conditions on early. Many teams are competing for the U23 worlds title and to set a marker as the top dogs as team have a shortened window until the next Olympic games. https://49er.org/event/2022-junior-world-championship-2/
The third passage race of West Highland Yachting week 2022 from Tobermory to Oban once again provided some close racing at the first turning mark. The J109 BlueJay just got across the bow of the second J109 Going to Red. The they were closely followed by the 3rd J109 Salamander who was forced to go wide as the fast charging Sigma 400 Sunrise with no mark room decided to ignore the rules and gybe in side rather than luffing to keep clear. It was a little disappointing that Sunrise failed to do any penalty turns after breaking the rules, karma came to the rescue of the boats who followed the rules as Sunrise's kit wrapped around the forestay which allowed Salamander to luff up under them retaking 3rd place on the long run to Oban. BlueJay showed a clean pair feels leading from start to finish just beating Salamander to win the race, GTR learnt that polars are king when one design racing and learnt the hard way that low and slow is not the way to go when racing a J109 down wind. There was lots of tight racing across the whole week which made for a great regatta in the Scottish Highlands. The team at Bottom Up Boat hope you are enjoying the action from WHYW 2023.
A number of lines are only allowing passengers ashore on excursions booked through the cruise line, effectively banning independant passenger port trips for the time being. This has come as a surprise to many passengers, and an unwelcome additional cost to a lot of families going on their first holiday in almost 2 years. We have been looking at exactly what this cost is and have found that (one our upcoming cruises at least) there are some excursions available at reasonable prices. For example, booking one excursion at each of the 3 ports that we will be visiting on our December P&O cruise comes to just over £300 for our family of 3 (or roughly £34/£35 per person at each port). This is a lot more than we would normally spend ashore, but isn't too prohibitive (especially given the money saved on the deal that we got for this cruise). Its also worth highlighting that cruise lines often apply loyalty discount when booking excursions, and that many allow free cancellation up to a few days before sailing (just in case the rules change). let us know if you have had to book additional excursions, or if you have cancelled a cruise because you can't spend free time ashore.
