Pitch, roll, and yaw: understanding your sailboat’s motion. Pitch: The bow rises as the stern falls, and vice versa - common when sailing into waves. Roll: The boat rocks from port to starboard. Unlike heel, which is a sustained lean under sail, roll is a back-and-forth motion. Yaw: The bow swings left or right, changing the direction the boat points. In rough seas, you can experience all three at once. Understanding each motion helps you recognize how your boat responds to wind, waves, and steering.

Il tempo corre con noi e noi proviamo a superarlo. Vogliamo essere all’imbocco di Gibilterra entro lunedì sera per capire il da farsi e per evitare la sventagliata che torna a soffiare da nord. Allora vela e motore, motore e vela. Ogni tanto si alza il vento e riduciamo motore, senza mai riuscire a spegnerlo. Teniamo una media di 7 nodi a 40 gradi con il vento. Chiacchiere, silenzi, riposo e lampughe insaporiscono questa veleggiata e ci portano miglio dopo miglio sempre più vicini a casa.
