✨ St. Maarten’s national bird isn’t just an island icon. It’s part of the everyday island experience. Brown pelicans soar over the coastline and dive headfirst into the sea. Once on the endangered species list, the Brown pelicans are now thriving in their protected nesting area here on the island. Known as the guardians of the shore, their 7-foot wing spans help on their patrols. Come sail with us and meet them in their natural element. 🌊 📍 Lazy Sheet Sailing | Philipsburg, St. Maarten ⚓ Shared & private day sails available 🎶 Music: “A Bird” by nojisuma (Pixabay) 👉 Book your sail: www.lazysheetsailing.com #LazySheetSailing #SXM #SailingSXM #StMaarten #SailSXM #IslandLife #NatureTravel #IslandVibes #Pelican #CaribbeanTravel #SailingLife

It was two years ago in May. I was teaching an instructional passage, and we were in Bermuda waiting for weather to allow us to continue north to Newport. Of course, we knew that the America’s Cup was happening. Still, the absolute mind-boggling spectacle of seeing those boats…..doing that! As we entered the outer bay near Hamilton, there, right in front of us, was Oracle, sitting in the water, getting coached up by her chase boats. Now not more than 40-50 yards away, the crew trimmed in the wing sail. The boat lurched a little, started moving….then bam! Like the Starship Enterprise in the Star Trek movies, it popped up, onto its’ foils, and was off at nearly 40 knots. Warp speed Scotty!
