Full video - We're motoring into West Lake Cove for an overnight stay on our 1983 Catalina 30 sailboat. The bilge will be flooded when we get there, but we'll have to fix it later because we're having a date night! Just the two of us! We're a sailing couple, on Lewisville Lake, Texas, and we do love to be anchored in the cove and cook on the grill. The priority for maintaining optimal VMG downwind in waves is to continue surfing. When required to gybe, whether due to your orientation to the course, tactics or wind change - maintaining speed on a wave is critical. Surfing keeps you moving down the course while completing the maneuver. The trick is to initiate surfing by doing a roundup. This allows you to bring extra sheet tension in while accelerating which allows you to gybe on a much deeper angle - hence maintaining connection on the wave. In this video, we've presented some basic steps to take to complete the surfing gybe.
