Mawar is a wild dugong living in Kabola Bay, off Mali Beach on Alor Island in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. He shares a remarkable bond with local fisherman and conservationist Onesimus Laa, known as Pak One. When Pak One calls his name from the boat, Mawar often rises to the surface to greet him. 🐋 What is a dugong? The dugong (Dugong dugon) is a gentle marine mammal, sometimes called a “sea cow,” that grazes on seagrass in shallow coastal waters. Dugongs are a protected species in Indonesia, and healthy seagrass beds are essential for their survival. 🌿 Who is Pak One? Pak One is a fisherman and community leader in Kabola. He noticed the coastline was eroding and began planting mangroves to protect it. “When I first started planting, they thought I was crazy,” he says. Today, the community has seen the benefits, including much larger catches for local fishermen. 🦈 Why is Mawar’s presence important? A dugong in the bay is a sign of a healthy marine ecosystem.
