The Nautitech 46 Open is known for its sailing performance and cruising comfort to which we can abide. The boat was therefore equipped accordingly and is totally off the grid. It is self-sufficient in electricity with 2400 W new solar panels, 900 amp Lithium batteries, with a 5000 W Victron quattro inverter/charger. All the running rigging goes back to the cockpit enabling sailing single handedly and safety at sea. A new radar and the large 12 inch chart plotter was installed in June 2023 which simplifies navigation. The new 25 hp outboarder provides for exploration at sea and fun water activities in the 340 UL Highfield dinghy. This is a good 'un with lots of useful insights on this boat or any cruising catamaran for that matter. ▫️ Here are some excerpts: ▫️ Kats: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your boat, Dracarys? SD: Dracarys is my first sailboat, and to date, I’ve taken her 14,000nm, including multiple trips between the Gulf side of Florida and the Chesapeake Bay, Mexico, and the Exumas. I ordered her after gaining a grand total of about three weeks of sailing experience – one week of ASA classes and two charters in the BVI. The largest boat I’d owned previously was a 23-foot wakeboarding boat. ▫️ Kats:What’s she like in heavy weather / a blow / big seas? SD: The most severe weather I’ve experienced so far was a on a sail from Key West to Sarasota – about 30 hours. There was a small craft advisory issued; winds and waves were at about 50-60 degrees off the nose at around 30kts and nine feet, respectively. . To me, she felt like a bulldozer running through marshmallow fluff. I don’t have the experience to know if that’s normal, but I was very pleased! There was minimal creaking and banging. Overall, the boat gave me the impression that she didn’t even notice the conditions. ▫️ Kats: What type of anchor/weight/chain length did you go for? SD: I chose a Rocna 40kg (88lb) anchor – I think it’s the largest/heaviest anchor that fits without modifications to the anchor roller/mount area. For chain, I went with 240 feet of Maggi 10mm. Why a random number like 240 feet? Because that’s what was available. ▫️ Kats: How was the buying process with Leopard or their dealer? SD: The buying process was uncomplicated and, for the most part, smooth. There’s an options changes “lock out” date that wasn’t communicated to me up front, so that created a tiny amount of stress, but all ended well. L’inizio di giornata non è dei migliori. Si, insomma, fa un caldo che ci si scioglie e parte mia mamma. Per il primo, basta fare un bagno (✅). Per il secondo, è tutta un’altra faccenda. Chissà perché i giorni sono pochi e scorrono a velocità doppia. Arriva presto il momento dei saluti. In questi mesi abbiamo decisamente fatto il callo. Si crea sempre un teatrino comico tra battute per alleggerire e lacrimoni che vogliono uscire e tanto un modo per farlo lo trovano. Dopo averla vista sparire nel flusso di studenti, famiglie e solitari, ognuno con una sua storia e una sua meta, ci avviamo. Andre si ferma un momento a guardare due anziani che si salutano. Lei capelli lunghi fino alle spalle bianchi come la neve, lui camicia stirata e appena larga su un corpo che appassisce lentamente. Chiudono gli occhi mentre si abbracciano. Torniamo a bordo e ci dedichiamo alla domenica. Bagno, pranzo, pisolino, pulizie. Chi riposa, chi chiacchiera. Io decido di pulire le murate di Julia che sono state macchiate da parabordi neri di pontili vari. Che lavoraccio, ma che soddisfazione. È la mia forma preferita di meditazione. E poi ora è tutto scintillante ✨ Per cena ci lasciamo un po’ andare. Gelato e cannoli. E le proteine? E il cibo salato? Ottima domanda. Vi rispondiamo appena ci passa la botta glicemica da zuccheri.
