Kaikōura Island is the seventh largest island in the Hauraki Gulf and in the early 2000's was purchased from private ownership to become a public reserve managed by a Trust. Since then, extensive eradication of pests has been undertaken and natural regeneration of native forest is occurring. We thoroughly enjoyed our walk up to the airfield on Kaikōura Island. Going to Red was locked in close combat with the Sigma 400 Sunrise. The wind was ranging between 15 and 20 knots on the first beat with J109 Going to just behind Sunrise in a really close cross on the approach to the top mark. Sunrise was leading West Highland Yacht Week after the end of the the first two races with Going to read sitting in 6th place. The bottom up boats team having a great time at WHYW, the weather is not great but the sailing and the social life is more than making up for the damp conditions.
