Seven years into boatlife, I sometimes look back at the naive girl I was when we first stepped on board ForTuna, unsure whether I envy her optimism or feel grateful to be a seasoned liveaboard now. She definitely didn’t expect these five things: 1. How much mental energy small decisions take. Weather, anchorages, groceries, maintenance, nothing is big on its own, but everything needs attention. 2. How quickly “adventure” turns into routine. And how necessary that routine becomes if you want to stay. 3. How comforting familiarity feels. Knowing one anchorage well can feel richer than constantly moving on. 4. How little the big moments matter compared to the small ones. It’s not the passages you remember most, but the everyday rhythms. 5. The first orca (nicknamed Moby Doll) ever to be caught alive was captured off East Point on Saturna Island. East Point is one of the view places in the world where you can get close to orcas from the land. The resident whales swim past twice a day East Point is only a couple of minutes walk from our summer house on Saturna island, so we see them frequently
