This is Day 2 of spending a week with 91-year-old Chiharu in my little longevity laboratory here in Buren Bay, Japan. It's only the second time we've met. The first was a few months ago when I took her sailing aboard Wahine. Today, Wahine belongs to her son Mitsu, while I remain here continuing my research into longevity and the art of community. Today's highlights included: • Sunrise Radio Taiso • Breakfast together • Mitsu catching our supper • Haiku over lunch • Snorkeling in the bay • Supper together • A mountaintop sunset • Skateboarding • High fives What strikes me isn't just that Chiharu can still do these things at 91. It's that she wants to. She approaches each part of the day with curiosity, enthusiasm, and a readiness to join in. These are only small observations from everyday life, but they continue to shape the questions I'm asking about what it really means to age well. Tomorrow... Day 3. En début d’après-midi, au passage du cap Melville, le vent accélère à 30 nœuds. Tout dessus en ciseaux, L’Envol part régulièrement au surf à 11-12 nœuds, avec une vitesse mini en permanence au-dessus de 8 nœuds. I bought a wee sailboat!! Introducing ENYA, a 26ft Victoria 800 built in 1996. After spending the last 6 months working my arse off and saving as much money as I could I finally did it!!! I had my eye on this boat when it first came on the market, and eventually went to have a look at it when I got back to Scotland. We hauled her out for a survey last week, and.. to keep a long story short I was handed the keys 3 days ago and we went on the maiden voyage yesterday. Gahhh I’m probably the happiest human in the world right now, just look at that wee canoe stern. After 10 years of living overseas, the plan is to spend the next few months sailing around the Scottish isles, seeing more of my homeland and hanging with the family.
