Al suono dei cannoni della Saluting Battery, una flotta internazionale di 140 yacht ha tagliato la linea del via della 43° edizione della Rolex Middle Sea Race, organizzata dal Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC). La classe MOCRA, che conta quest’anno sull’inedita partecipazione di ben cinque trimarani MOD70, in osservanza delle procedure di partenza apre la strada delle 606 miglia nautiche di giro antiorario della Sicilia e delle sue isole, con partenza e arrivo a La Valletta. Una regata che si preannuncia lunga e combattuta, in condizioni di venti molto leggeri dovuti ad un’alta pressione sul Mediterraneo. E se normalmente per terminare il percorso gli yacht più veloci impiegano circa due giorni, secondo i modelli di oggi, la sfida si potrebbe protrarre dai 4 ai 6 giorni. In competizione con Giovanni Soldini e l’equipaggio di Maserati Multi70, che viaggia in configurazione volante, ci sono Axciss (ITA), dell’armatore Cosimo Malesci con skipper Eric Defert; Mana (ITA) di Riccardo Pavoncelli con skipper Paul Larsen; Snowflake (USA), ex Phaedo 3, dell’armatore Frank Slootman con skipper il neozelandese Gavin Brady e Zoulou (FRA), ex Powerplay, di Erik Maris con a bordo Loick Peyron. In classe MOCRA, corrono anche Dakota (NOR), Kia Ora (FR), Minimole (ITA). “Purtroppo il meteo per noi non è assolutamente favorevole. Ci aspettiamo una regata molto lenta, con pochissimo vento e con i nostri foil in acqua non siamo certo i favoriti”. dice Giovanni Soldini, al momento di salpare: “C’è comunque grande entusiasmo: ci sono cinque MOD70 ed è la prima volta che cinque barche così si affrontano in acqua tutte insieme e quindi il morale è alto e come al solito cercheremo di vendere cara la pelle anche se sarà un’impresa”. The full displacement hull provides stability in all kinds of sea states yet she remains easily maneuverable thanks to the unique articulating rudder, large prop and bow thruster. The full walk-around deck design provides safety for the crew while they access the bow or come back to the fully enclosed aft deck. Stepping inside the interior one instantly is drawn to the stunning teak woodwork found throughout this vessel. The main salon is surrounded by windows with ample seating for guests around a custom table that converts to a double berth if needed. The gourmet galley is a marine chefs dream as not only is it tastefully equipped with a large fridge/freezer, propane stove and oven, corian countertops and storage capable of provisioning a lengthy voyage with ease, it is positioned on the same level as the main salon to keep the conversation flowing while meal preparations are underway. Stepping up into the pilothouse that provides fantastic visibility, the interior helm station is well appointed with easily visual gauges and electronics monitoring ship performance. Access to both port and starboard decks is provided by Freeman aluminum dutch doors and an additional single pilot berth is easily converted if needed. Down below the master cabin and head with separate shower is the ultimate in Captains quarters with a large centreline berth, tons of storage and easy access to the engine room if needed.
