100 meters to the finish, we’re holding third place — then suddenly, the sound of the rudder chain snapping, and the yacht luffs sharply into the wind. The skipper stayed calm and acted fast, inserting the emergency tiller into the rudder stock to regain direct control of the rudder blade, bypassing the wheel. Thanks to the quick response, the yacht lost only a few positions and still crossed the finish line successfully. Back in the marina, technicians from the charter company were called in. They repaired the system and installed a new steering chain. The Kerr 32 HighJacker lead the way in the first race of the annual strangford lough narrows series. The sun was peaking through the clouds just after the start on the first run before the rain and wind built with puffs over 30 knots. The Kerr 32 slipped away for the the J109 GTR on the way to the bottom mark before stretching their lead on the first beat. As the rain and wind kicking in the during the second half of the race the J109 powered on to victory both over the line and on corrected time.
