As the Vinson prepares to set sail back to South Georgia, here at KM Yachtbuilders we just turned the hull of her future sister boat. Most aluminum boats are built upside down to facilitate welding. Turning the hull up is a significant milestone: It is the equator of the building process and, once straightened, not only starts to look like a real boat but opens the door to further work. The vessel gradually comes to life. Skip Novak was there for such a special moment. We want to share our GTFO plan of retiring early to explore the world on a Balance 482 catamaran. We plan to retire June 1, 2023, Dennis’s mandatory retirement date when he will have served 30 years in the Army. We currently own a 1984 Catalina 30’ monohull sailboat on the Chesapeake Bay. This is our practice boat and is not designed for the open ocean and too small for full-time, liveaboard life. We put non-refundable money to reserve our Balance 482 catamaran.
