Four common marine diesel problems and where to look first. Cranks but won’t start? Start with the fuel system. Check that you have fuel, the shutoff valve is open, the filters are clear, and there is no air in the fuel lines. Won’t crank at all? Start with the electrical system. Check the battery charge, battery switch, terminals, wiring connections, fuses, and starter circuit. Starts but stalls when shifted into gear? Check the prop and drivetrain for resistance. A line, fishing gear, or other debris wrapped around the prop can put enough load on the engine to stall it. Overheating? Start with the cooling system. Check that the raw water seacock is open, the strainer is clear, water is flowing from the exhaust, the impeller is intact, and the coolant level is correct. These symptoms do not guarantee the exact failure, but they can tell you which system to investigate first. #sailingschool #sailboat #boat #ship #yacht
