Going against the tide and straight into the wind, I was grateful the storm cells stayed just out of arms reach. Almost every town in Croatia features a beautiful and historically significant Old Town. Get lost in the cobbled streets, hidden alleyways, and narrow streets of these fascinating locations as you discover all the wonderful Old Towns of Croatia. Thanks to Roman, Venetian and Gothic influences over the years, Croatia boasts an impressive display of architecture and mesmerizing Old World Charm. Below you'll find our favourite Old Town destinations: 1. Dubrovnik Old Town - this Old Town is famous for its polished marbled streets, fortified City Walls, and impressive architecture. Walk along the main street, or 'Stradun' and discover Croatia as it once was. 2. Zadar Old Town - today Zadar is a youthful, cosmopolitan city with a rich and interesting history, however as the former Captial City of Dalmatia, Zadar's Old Town is brimming with history and culture that's just waiting to be explored. 3. Sibenik Old Town - well known as the first town to be founded by the Croatian people, Sibenik Old Town features the impressive St. James cathedral that has UNESCO World Heritage protection. Get lost in the maze of cobbled streets or climb the cathedral for views out over the sea. 4. Hvar Old Town - this bustling town has the largest Town Square in all of Dalmatia and features a maze of cobbled alleyways, narrow streets, and authentic Dalmatian restaurants. The Spanjola Fortress towers over the town of Hvar and provides impressive views. 5. Split Old Town - Diocletian's Palace forms the basis of the Old Town in Split, and was built some 1,700 years ago between the 3rd and 4th Centuries. As one of the best-preserved examples of Roman architecture, Diocletian's Palace is a must for exploring Croatian old-world charm. 6. Korcula Old Town - Korcula's fortified Old Town features bell towers, turrets, winding streets, and an eclectic mix of restaurants, cafes, bars, and shops. As the rumoured birthplace of Marco Polo, Korcula Old Town has a mysterious and energetic vibe.
