We know that learning to sail can be overwhelming and there is a lot to take in. In an effort to help, we’ve created a series of “Bite Sized Lessons” taken straight out of our textbooks – Sailing Made Easy and Coastal Cruising Made Easy. In this lesson we take a look at who has the right of way as two sailboats approach each other; one on starboard tack, the other on port tack.

The figure 8 knot is one of if not the most used sailing stoppers knots. It is easy to tie, provides a decent sized stopper and is relatively easier to untie after load has been applied. For a more detailed tutorial follow the link below. https://youtu.be/jV99J9nmG1g When tying the figure 8 knot it is important pull it really tight, with stiff modern ropes the knot can have a tendency to untie itself if it is only loosely tightened. If you have mastered this knot and would like to learn more the following playlist has more knots for you to know and master. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMoCfFBA9IMUcOoZy5QT-o66DM8uHukkH If you want to know even more knots why not pick up a copy of the definitive book on knots. The Ashley Book of Knot has approximately 3900 different kinds, from simple hitches to “Marlinspike Seamanship.” Mr. Ashley has included almost everything there is to know about them. Precisely named and classified (some new ones for the first time officially), they can be easily found in the big index. He tells when they appeared, something about their history, and what they are good for. . https://amzn.to/3fkisle We hope you enjoyed todays video, thanks for stopping by and supporting Bottom up Boats, as an amazon associate we get commission from associated sales. We love looking back over the summer’s highlights! This year the 2000 class headed to Hayling Island Sailing Club for their UK Nationals. Sunshine? Check. Champagne sailing? Check. Family-fun lay day? Check. The event certainly led up to the 2000 class’s ethos of fast family fun! #rssailing #sailitliveitloveit
