Despite its name, the #FlyingGurnard does not actually fly in the air like a bird or insect. Its specialised pectoral fins are actually enlarged and resemble wings. These "wings" are brightly coloured and have intricate patterns, making them visually striking. When threatened or startled, the Flying Gurnard spreads its pectoral fins wide open, creating the illusion of flight as it glides through the #water. This display serves as a defence mechanism to intimidate potential predators and deter them from attacking. While it may not truly fly, the Flying Gurnard's unique adaptation allows it to move gracefully and swiftly #underwater. In August of 2017 I sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. I am trying out my new whisker pole. It is telescopic and weighs just 6 kilos. The reviews were not fantastic but I bought it anyway with the downsides in mind. It works well so far in up to 25 knots from behind...I will ditch my other pole which weighs 20 kilos and is 14 ft long. This one telescopes from 7ft to 15 ft.
