Why is wind speed measured in knots at sea? Because knots are the standard unit of speed in marine navigation. A knot equals one nautical mile per hour, so wind speed, boat speed, and current can all be measured and compared using the same system. That matters on the water. Sailors are constantly evaluating how the wind, current, and vessel are interacting, and using one common unit keeps those numbers directly comparable. It also ties wind speed into the same nautical-mile system used on marine charts and in navigation. Wind could be measured in miles per hour. At sea, knots simply make more sense.
