Rio Dulce has sheltered sailors from hurricanes for generations, but its entrance lies behind a sandbar with only five or six feet of water. A massive schooner like S/V Fantome drew 13 feet, so even heeling her over with dinghies could not get her into safety. On January 1st, the Global Surveyor sailed from Funchal to Porto Santo, all sails up. A great way to spend the first day of 2024. The Madeira Island Fireworks were spectacular! We saw the possibly largest fireworks display in Europe right from the deck of Global Surveyor! Visiting Porto Santo with its golden beaches and turquoise waters and the Savage archipelago which is a recognised UNESCO site was simply a treat. @gowestsailing
