The first test of our Dyneema loops that replace metal chainplates as part of our full Dyneema Standing rigging project within the full refit of our 1977 Rival 38. We are refitting our Rival 38 for a Sustainable Sailing retirement in a few years. Two years ago, when we bought Vida she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings. We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all electric (motor, cooking etc). Now that the inside is dry (thanks to new windows, new hatches and leak chasing) we are fitting her out for live-aboard world cruising. That includes no fossil fuels, updating the rig and deck plus much more. The new Bayliner Element XR7 looks, at first glance, a bit unusual—is it a pontoon boat? A deck boat? A runabout? The answer in all cases is yes, and like the other Elements in Bayliner’s stables, instead of following the “norm” the XR7 blazes new trails of its own. The console houses a head compartment that’s a big step up from the canvas pop-up head enclosures found on most pontoons. One gripe: there was no strap to secure the head door open (nor was there one for the boarding door). Let’s remember that we tested a prototype and Bayliner may add straps to production boats, but if they don’t, this is something you’ll want to add on your own.
