Quando la pala è in linea con la chiglia tale angolo è 0°. Agendo sulla timoneria tale angolo viene ovviamente variato per cambiare la direzione (la prua). E' però normale che per mantenere una certa direzione si debba navigare con un piccolo angolo di barra, per compensare l'effetto di forze esterne (es. vento, corrente, eliche, etc.). Molte imbarcazioni sono dotate di uno strumento (comunemente chiamato "rudder"), meccanico o elettronico, che fornisce l'indicazione di tale angolo al timoniere. azimut: (s.m.) (Carteggio) azimuth Nella navigazione astronomica, relativamente ad un astro, indica l'arco di cerchio compreso tra il Nord e la verticale dell'astro stesso. E' espresso in gradi (da 0° a 360°) e può essere calcolato con l'uso di apposite tabelle oppure rilevato direttamente con l'osservazione dell'astro, mediante particolari bussole per misurazioni "polari". Ad esempio l'azimut del sole viene rilevato (congiuntamente alla "altezza") per calcolare la propria posizione.
