This is the fourth time the Volvo Ocean Race will start from Alicante Alicante will welcome the world for the start of the Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18 when the Race Village opens on October 11. Home to just short of half a million people, it’s the fourth time Alicante has opened the action, and the third since the race set up its permanent HQ in the port. It was a comprehensive victory for the Spanish team in the MAPFRE In-Port Race Alicante. Halekai is Hawaiian for ‘house on the sea’ – and what a house! The name of the owners’ previous yacht also has Hawaiian origins, so this elegant, powerful sloop is a natural progression for a highly experienced repeat customer. Based on a Bloemsma fabricated aluminum hull, Halekai, the fourth yacht in the 128 series, was completed by Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth, UK and is the second successful project we have completed with the Cornish yard. Although based on the well-proven 128 hull design, Halekai is highly customized with a flexible deckplan package for regatta performance, specialized kite surfing and sailboard stowage in the amidships cockpit and a custom navigation station in the aft deckhouse which leads into the working cockpit. Hoek Design is responsible for the general arrangement and all the interior joinery and worked closely with celebrated American interior designer Ken Fulk who has injected a Hawaiian influence. The yacht can accommodate eight guests, including the owners, and five crew.

The Royal Malta Yacht Club successfully hosted the Yachting Malta Race Week, an action-packed programme of sailing events that brought together offshore, coastal, dinghy, and women’s sailing competitions. The week-long schedule showcased the diversity of the sport and the enthusiasm of the Maltese sailing community. The programme featured a variety of events, including a long offshore race to Licata, coastal and round-the-cans races, and a Dinghy Ranking Regatta. In addition, the Royal Malta Yacht Club joined forces with Vikings Sailing Club to host Steering the Course, a World Sailing initiative aimed at encouraging greater female participation in the sport.
