Concept & Introduction: Take a look inside North Sails’ brand new UK sail loft. The loft is based in Gosport, on the southern coast of the UK, and houses a number of global departments under one roof. These include Superyacht finishing and sail production for One Design and North Sails 3Di. As NorthSails’ European flagship facility, the loft enables North Sails to remain at the forefront of sail technology, innovation and manufacturing. Gosport is the first loft in the world to specialise in superyacht sails, and it’s gigantic raised floor – measuring 1,950m2 – is the largest ever built. A team of 9 designers and 82 staff members are aided by state-of-the-art technology and equipment, ensuring sails are delivered quickly, and safely – with no compromises in quality. The space is split into two manufacturing bays, and the main floor is designed to cater to superyacht sail finishing. Measuring 101x30m, the space can accommodate two J-Class headsails and a mainsail laid out simultaneously. The secondary bay is dedicated to One Design sailmaking and Certified Service sail care. With the ever-increasing explosion of foiling into the sailing community Australian Sailing is working to develop programs and resources to support sailors and clubs to get involved in this new and exciting space. One of the first initiatives is the development of FOIL-LABs which are day long introductory sessions allowing participants to experience and learn about foiling. FOIL-LABs provide a safe space for sailors to learn and interact with a new type of sailing experience and equip themselves with new knowledge to take on foiling classes. Sailors will learn the fundamentals that drive a hydrofoils performance, as well learn about the body and physical relationships that offer a path to mastery. Mastering the basics gives more options to have more fun, more often. It also allows sailors to chase performance in a range of modern performance sailing classes in a fun and fulfilling way. We adopted a stray dog that was left at the shipyard we are rebuilding our boat and got surprised when we saw how skilful he is!
