Birds of Paradise in Raja Ampat: A Sunrise Trek into the Rainforest 🌿🐦 Raja Ampat, in West Papua, Indonesia, is often called the last paradise on Earth. It is famous for its coral reefs and marine life, but hidden deep in its jungles are some of the most beautiful birds on the planet: the birds of paradise. 🐦 Where can you see birds of paradise in Raja Ampat? Birds of paradise live in the rainforests of Raja Ampat’s larger islands. Two species, the red bird-of-paradise and Wilson’s bird-of-paradise, are found only in Raja Ampat and nowhere else on Earth. Visitors usually watch them from simple hides in the forest, guided by local community members who know where the birds gather. 🌅 When is the best time to see birds of paradise? Early morning is the best time. In this video, we set out well before sunrise from our ship, Ombak Putih, and trek through pristine rainforest by head torch, our lights dancing through the trees like fireflies. From the hides, we wait for a chance to glimpse these elusive birds. 🤝 Who protects the birds of paradise? Since 2018, the birds at this site have been under the protection of Elise, a local guardian who helps keep the forest and its wildlife safe.
