Toni and I headed to “Moments in Time” to raise and furl the screecher sail but the pouring rain caused by Ernesto out in the Atlantic delayed our arrival. Since the breeze was too much to raise and furl a large sail, we decided to rig the flag halyards off the port and starboard spreaders. At least we got something checked off our “to do” list. Although the island-continent of Australia has only 26 million inhabitants - just 8% of the population of the United States - it nevertheless boasts a huge community of sailing enthusiasts and yacht builders are also well established. This context has been conducive to the holding of a major international boat show in Sydney since 1968. A second major event was launched in 1989, at the Sanctuary Cove marina complex at the northern end of the Gold Coast, and in 2008, the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (just) beat its rival to the south. The 2024 edition, held from May 23 to 26, attracted almost 50,000 visitors, 300 exhibitors, 740 boats and no fewer than 2,500 boating products. Giorno 193 - verso santo Domingo La mattina passa veloce tra ponti che si aprono, dogane che si svolgono e ormeggi che si mollano. Julia è pronta e noi con lei. Prua su santo Domingo. Ci rimettiamo in oceano dopo giorni di meteo instabile. Sfruttiamo una finestra che sembra una buona occasione per raggiungere la nostra destinazione. Siccome siamo in due, cerchiamo di portarci avanti preparando in anticipo ciò che mangeremo nei prossimi giorni. Il pilota ci ricorda che vuole le sue attenzioni. Per fortuna questa volta è una vite della morsettiera dei fili ad essere lenta: una stretta di cacciavite ed è tutto a posto. Bene così! La notte arriva veloce. Una notte che sa un po’ di giorno vista l’intensità della mezza luna su di noi. Ora riprendiamo i turni: due ore a testa! Che la traversata abbia inizio! Andrea
