Picking up a mooring under sail is one of those skills you may not use often - until you really need it. The key is the approach. Come in on a close reach, roughly 60° off the wind. About 20 boat lengths out, furl or drop the headsail and continue under mainsail alone. Around 5 boat lengths out, ease the mainsail completely and let the boat’s momentum carry you toward the mooring. The goal is to arrive with enough steerage to stay in control, but almost no speed. If the approach isn’t right, don’t force it. Sail away, reset, and try again. Practice the maneuver in open water with a floating marker or fender before attempting it in a crowded mooring field. #sailing #sailingschool #sailboat #sailinglife
