The Archipielago de Revillagigedo is home to seven species of sharks, playful bottlenose dolphins, inquisitive manta rays, and clouds of jacks, barracuda, and wahoo. From mid-February to mid-April, humpback whales visit this area offering guests opportunities for surface sightings and, when mother nature allows, a unique chance to see them underwater. Seven years into boatlife, I sometimes look back at the naive girl I was when we first stepped on board ForTuna, unsure whether I envy her optimism or feel grateful to be a seasoned liveaboard now. She definitely didn’t expect these five things: 1. How much mental energy small decisions take. Weather, anchorages, groceries, maintenance, nothing is big on its own, but everything needs attention. 2. How quickly “adventure” turns into routine. And how necessary that routine becomes if you want to stay. 3. How comforting familiarity feels. Knowing one anchorage well can feel richer than constantly moving on. 4. How little the big moments matter compared to the small ones. It’s not the passages you remember most, but the everyday rhythms. 5.
