Day 11 of our Christmas calendar brings you into the forward head, a clever little space where you have everything you need. A rule of thumb on board a boat is that everything should have at least two functions. The faucet is a great example of that! 🌟 You use it for washing your hands, just like at home, but this one also turns into your shower head! The main difference from the aft head? Here, the shower and sink are combined, making the most of the limited space. For centuries sailors have navigated their way across the oceans by celestial navigation or nautical astronomy - using a sextant with the sun, moon, planets, and stars. For the modern sailor, it is essential when crossing oceans as back up to the modern and much relied upon electronic navigation. If you are curious about how to use a sextant or have taken the RYA Yachtmaster or Ocean Theory courses, or are even self-taught, our celestial sailing weekends are ideal offering both an introduction and a refresher. All are welcome. A big advantage is that you learn in a small group, under the supervision of an expert instructor. The weekends involve sailing along the south side of the Isle of Wight and back up through the Needles. A beautiful area to sail whilst offering ample opportunity to practice using the sextant.
