Flat calm. Engine at full power. And the ship barely moves. In 1893, Fridtjof Nansen's ship Fram slowed from 6 knots to about 1.5 near the Taymyr Peninsula. There was no ice and nothing touching the hull. The cause was hidden under it: a layer of light fresh water sitting on heavy salt water. When the ship moves, most of the engine's power goes into making a huge invisible wave at the boundary between the layers. Only a small part is left to push the ship forward.
