J109 Going to Red was weaving in and out of the slower fleets as the made their way to Oban on the first passage race of West Highland Week 2023. Things we relatively calm at this stage of the race with the helping tide reducing the apparent breeze which made for smooth sailing which made it easy to judge close crosses like this one. As the day progress and the breeze built things got a little more lively towards the second half of the race with a few of the close crosses getting done with the boats more out of control than in. The bottom up boats team had a great time at WHYW, the weather was not great but the sailing and the social life more than made up for the damp conditions. The Spirit of Dana Point is a traditionally built replica of a 1770's privateer schooner used throughout the American Revolution. The ship is 118 feet in length with a rig height of 100 feet and almost 5,000 square feet of sail. On this day, while racing in the Dana Point Harbor Championships, the Spirit of Dana Point was out in 12-14 knots of true wind with gusts to 20 knots! It currently resides at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point, CA.
