While much of the team at Pioneer Sailing Trust has been busy preparing for the upcoming Ofsted inspection, it was very much business as usual on the water this morning. Work continued on Pioneer CK18, as Simon, Mick, and Teymour got stuck into the important job of transferring her spars back on board after their winter maintenance. Over the colder months, these components are often removed, inspected, and repaired to ensure everything is in top condition for the sailing season ahead. For those wondering, a spar is a general term used in boating to describe the poles that support and control the sails — such as masts, booms, and gaffs. They are essential parts of a sailing vessel, giving the sails their shape and allowing the boat to harness the wind effectively. 💫 Catherine Chabaud, première femme française à avoir bouclé un tour du monde à la voile en solitaire, sans escale et en course, lors du Vendée Globe 1996-1997. ⛈️ Lors de ce fameux Vendée Globe, alors qu’elle affronte les mers du Sud seule à bord de son monocoque “Whirlpool-Europe 2”, elle traverse une tempête d’une violence inouïe. Les vagues sont si hautes qu’elle ne voit plus l’horizon. Elle raconte qu’à un moment, elle s’est surprise à parler à haute voix à son bateau comme à une personne : 🐋 « Je lui disais : Tiens bon, mon grand. Allez, on y va tous les deux, on sort de là ensemble. » 👍🏽 Ce moment d’intimité entre la navigatrice et son voilier illustre magnifiquement la relation fusionnelle que peuvent entretenir les marins avec leur embarcation, surtout dans les situations extrêmes. The Mumm 36 is a great boat to push hard downwind in a breeze. As soon as the wind gets above 15 to 18 knots you could easily get the boat up and planning on a broad reach or run. With the storm cloud blowing in rain and the blue sky shinning in the back ground the whole crew was on edge as the tried to soak deep at speed to make it around the bottom mark without the need for a risky gybe. With the waves almost breaking breaking as the sea way built we were easily touching 12 knots of boats speed as raced toward the bottom mark. This was another Mumm 36 memory for our days racing Go To Red on Strangford lough.
