Pitch, roll, and yaw: understanding your sailboat’s motion. Pitch: The bow rises as the stern falls, and vice versa - common when sailing into waves. Roll: The boat rocks from port to starboard. Unlike heel, which is a sustained lean under sail, roll is a back-and-forth motion. Yaw: The bow swings left or right, changing the direction the boat points.
