We stopped on over to Long Island from George Town, Bahamas for a few days. We anchored out in Thompson Bay, near Salt Pond. There's a dinghy dock that is privately owned north of the Government Dock. We've been told that the owners are very gracious to allow cruisers to use it...and we agree. It's super nice. Just outside of the fence, there are some garbage cans for garbage. I forget about the exact name of the street, but I learned it's named after the family that owns the property nearby, Basil. Take a right on Queens Highway and the Farmer's Market is on the right. Perhaps a quarter mile down the road. We bought Long Island Salt, Long Island Pepper Salt, Hot Sauce, Fresh Dill, Fresh Basil and Zucchini Bread. We did a major refit on our sailboat, and one of the key jobs was replacing the cutlass bearings — the parts that support the propeller shafts and keep vibrations low when the props spin. To do this, we hauled the boat out of the water, dropped the rudders, pulled the shafts, and used a heat gun to loosen the glue holding the old bearings in place. Once they slid out, we pressed in brand-new bearings, reinstalled everything, and got ready to launch again! It’s one of those behind-the-scenes jobs that makes a huge difference in how smooth and reliable the boat feels underway.
