Few British pre-war cruiser-racers have had so much love and care lavished on them, but this striking 50 ft classic yawl - Fred Shepherd’s last design - thoroughly deserves it. Efter 3,5 dygn till havs är vi äntligen framme vid Tuamotus och Fakarava-atollen! 🏝️🌊 Men… vi kan inte bara segla in. Just nu ligger vi och driver bi utanför atollen och väntar på rätt tillfälle att gå in. Att ”driva bi” betyder att vi inte ligger för ankar och inte heller seglar mot något särskilt mål. Vi låter helt enkelt båten driva med vind och ström medan vi väntar. Vi håller koll på positionen och ser till att vi har gott om avstånd från revet. Och just här är det extra viktigt att välja rätt tidpunkt. En atoll som Fakarava är som en stor lagun omgiven av korallrev. In till lagunen finns en smal passage genom revet och där kan det strömma rejält. När tidvattnet rör sig ut ur lagunen kan enorma mängder vatten pressas genom passagen. Då kan strömmen bli väldigt stark och skapa kraftiga virvlar och vågor. Därför vill vi tajma vår passage med slack water, slackvatten. Det är den korta perioden när strömmen vänder och vattnet nästan står stilla innan det börjar strömma åt andra hållet. Så just nu väntar vi. Vi har seglat 570 sjömil från Nuku Hiva och efter 3,5 dygn är målet precis framför oss… men vi behöver vänta in rätt ”fönster” för att kunna ta oss genom passagen på ett säkert sätt. Det är ganska häftigt ändå. Efter flera dygn mitt ute på Stilla havet ligger vi nu precis utanför en av världens vackraste atoller och det sista vi behöver göra är att ha bråttom. ❤️ Nu hoppas vi på rätt slack och sen bär det av in i Fakarava! 🌴⛵️ Har du hört talas om slackvatten och varför man måste tajma infarten till en atoll? 👇
