J109 Going to Red was weaving in and out of the slower fleets as the made their way to Oban on the first passage race of West Highland Week 2023. Things we relatively calm at this stage of the race with the helping tide reducing the apparent breeze which made for smooth sailing which made it easy to judge close crosses like this one. As the day progress and the breeze built things got a little more lively towards the second half of the race with a few of the close crosses getting done with the boats more out of control than in. The bottom up boats team had a great time at WHYW, the weather was not great but the sailing and the social life more than made up for the damp conditions. Ci eravamo abituati alla morbida e alta onda lunga oceanica. Questa notte abbiamo lasciato la marina Rubicon di Lanzarote per raggiungere la marina di Las Palmas, sull’isola di Gran Canaria. Dopo poche miglia a vela il mare inizia a innervosirsi presentandoci una corta, alta e fastidiosa onda incrociata. Non riuscivi a stare in piedi! Ogni cambio turno ci si lamentava delle condizioni con chi sopraggiungeva, che a sua volta non era riuscito a dormire come avrebbe voluto. Tutto sommato la notte è comunque passata. Siamo arrivati a Las Palmas e ci siamo messi all’ancora. I prossimi giorni saranno di preparazione della barca per la traversata. Adesso andiamo a dormire presto per recuperare le ore dormite poco e male questa notte. Buona befana a tutti! Andrea
