Kaikōura Island is the seventh largest island in the Hauraki Gulf and in the early 2000's was purchased from private ownership to become a public reserve managed by a Trust. Since then, extensive eradication of pests has been undertaken and natural regeneration of native forest is occurring. We thoroughly enjoyed our walk up to the airfield on Kaikōura Island. Whilst sailing New Zealand's northern coastline, we're completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements. The owner of this sensational 180-foot ketch was attracted by the concept of having a separate aft section of the boat all to himself, including a stateroom, deckhouse and cockpit. The stateroom itself is huge, and includes walk-in closets and a magnificent bathroom. Adele still has ample space for four guest suites, four crew cabins and some lovely relaxation areas.
