Shorts Lumikha
#shorts Off grid living requires attention to detail. If a towing line breaks it could mean losing a very valuable piece of equipment for those living aboard a boat. Knowing a few basic knots turned a potential headache into a minor fix. Also, setting up a redundant system saved me from having to buy a new dinghy! My advice is ALWAYS have backup lines if you tow your dinghy. Also, I should have put in abrasion guards of some sort but I didn’t! Off grid living requires planning ahead. This was a clear example of just how important that is.
A rainy day in the Wrangell, Alaska shipyard with our 80’ steel schooner Alaskan Gypsy. After rescuing her from sinking in Ketchikan, I’m inside tackling the next challenge — demolishing the bathroom (head) to reach a badly corroded section of hull plating. This short clip shows a small moment in a big refit — breaking down the old vanity, cutting out rotten plywood, and facing the reality of steel boat restoration. In December I crossed the Atlantic from the Canary Islands to Barbados on a friends Lagoon 380. For the first 2000 miles or so we had calms or very light winds and so fellow crew member Erick could fly his drone. After a while you don't notice the swells when on board, it's just a gentle rocking motion. Even when the wind picked up there were none of the "mountainous seas" beloved by the media!
