This weekend people all over the country (and the world!) are greening their houses, their workplaces, and their cities in preparation for the holiday season. Why not let a boat be part of the fun?! Here in Gig Harbor, Washington we have a great maritime culture, and every year there is a holiday boat parade where people festoon their boats with lights, and circle the harbor after sunset. It's fun to view both from the water and from land, taking in the holiday lights from both sides. Whether your town has an event like ours, or not, there's no reason not to head to the water this holiday season and let the dinghies get some love too! The GLY World Odyssey 500 yachts brought gifts, their own and gifts received from Byond Relief NZ & Rotary Russel island NZ in Opua to be transported to the 10 local communities visited in May 2023. In order to avoid problems, these 'small' gifts were only given after a public event was arranged with the local village leader so everything was done 'in the open' and shared fairly between the local people. To preserve their dignity, the sailors accepted the generous gifts of fresh fruits & local handicrafts given to them. A win-win situation as it should always be! Thanks also to our fund raising patrons who generously donated solar lights (seen in another video) to these communities. This 'mission' was born after the last 2 tropical cyclones and earthquake that hit Vanuatu in March 2023. Thankfully most communities are quite resilient but still need some help in the aftermath of previous cyclones where little help was received because of pandemic restrictions. Another concern for people is police. I haven't many issues with police the entire time I've lived or visited Mexico. ⁠ ⁠ My biggest tips:⁠ 🗣️ It does help to know Spanish. If you plan on visiting Mexico, take some time to learn. It's not only helpful in sticky situations but also unlocks more experiences of the culture and people, which is the whole point of travel.⁠ 👮‍♀️ Follow the laws. Don't speed or drive like an turd. ⁠ 🚨 If you do get pulled over, do whatever you can to not bribe the police. Foreigners opting to pay cash directly to police is why people continue to have problems with them. If you get pulled over, ask for an official multa (ticket) and to go to the station to pay it directly. This takes more time, but sometimes insisting on not giving the police officer petty cash will make them drop the issue all together.⁠ ⁠ Finally, don't let the news scare you. Are there certain parts of Mexico that are dangerous? Yes, of course, just like any other country, but Baja is pretty well protected as a tourism hot spot.⁠
