In July 2012, a tank of DVB — a chemical that heats itself when it gets warm — sat for 10 days in the sun in New Orleans. Then it was loaded deep inside the container ship MSC Flaminia, next to heated fuel tanks. Nobody on board was properly warned it was sensitive to heat. Two weeks later, in the middle of the Atlantic, smoke came out of hold 4. When the crew went to fight the fire, the vapour exploded. Three seafarers lost their lives. A US court later found the shipper and the tank operator liable for failing to warn about the heat risk. 📚 Sources: US Court of Appeals (2nd Cir.) — In re M/V MSC Flaminia; England & Wales High Court (Admiralty) 2022.
