Ira was taking photos from the back of a local powerboat for the finishers of the Pacific Cup (the fun race to Hawaii!) and got pooped as all heck by 15-20 ft swell. I'm curious to know if this is the average population density of crown of thorns sea stars for this area of Baja California. I went down a little rabbit hole about their biology, behavior, and ways we can support the coral reef ecosystem. That being said, what I witnessed while scuba diving in La Paz is nothing compared to the imagery I found of these sea stars taking over coral reefs in Australia.
