Ever wondered what it really takes to keep a sailboat running and ready for adventure? In this video, I break down our regular liveaboard expenses - from memberships, fuel, and insurance to marina life - plus the big-ticket upgrades and repairs that have kept us cruising, like a new alternator, starter motor, anchor chain, and even sails. I’ll share how these costs add up over time, what surprised us the most, and a few lessons we’ve learned along the way. Whether you’re planning to live aboard or just curious about the behind-the-scenes of sailing life, this one’s for you. Is this more or less than you expected? Tell me below 👇

After renting out their house in New Zealand, Renee and Lynette pushed off aboard their steel sailboat Tekaihau to sail around the world. They have sailed over 30,000 nautical miles and visited 16 countries so far. Just another 8000 miles to go... We interviewed Renee and Lynette aboard their 1968 Moody Halberdier sailboat on the hard in Bobby's boat yard in Sint Maarten in February 2012...

The finish to Race 3 of the annual Narrows Regatta on Strangford Lough was a quick reach to the finish after the breeze picked up and pivoted 180 degrees. It was next to impossible for the J109 GTR to match it with the VX1 Sports boats which blasted past on the way back to Portaferry. The chasing VX1 where having a tough time keeping their height as the pressure built so while they were a lot faster they ended up sailing greater distance which kept GTR in the race The J109 GTR could not compete in this race but went on to take the overall series win with a consistent performance across the weekend. The team at Bottom Up Boats hope you are enjoying these quick bits from the 2024 racing on Strangford Lough Northern Ireland.
