Competent Crew Course details: ➜ https://www.firstclasssailing.com/rya-courses/competent-crew In this video shot on the Solent, we look at gybing in a little more detail. First thing we do before gybing is to centre the main. In the clip recorded during a Competent Crew course sailing out of Southampton, you see us on port tack; and we'll gybe onto starboard tack. As the stern goes through the wind, the wind gets behind the sails, and the headsail will start to come over, and the main will come across. We don't need to do anything with the main sheet at this point, but we do need to ease the headsail sheet on starboard, and take up the sheet on port. And then at this point we will ease the main sheet to let the main out. You can watch the first gybing tutorial video here: ➜ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6r2qLC51s0 ** About the RYA Competent Crew course in Southampton ** The RYA Competent Crew course is the perfect introduction for beginners who want to get into sailing and is specifically designed for those with little to no sailing experience. We LOVE Nando’s Peri-Peri sauce, but it's is hard to find (and pricey!) in Trinidad, so I decided to make my own version. The result; something that's smoky, spicy, tangy and full of flavour, which we can adapt to local ingredients as we sail around the work. 👉 Recipe: https://www.travelsketchsailing.com/post/homemade-nando-s-peri-peri-sauce To start, I char-grilled onions and capsicum (bell peppers) on the boat, then blended them with garlic, hot peppers, and spices. The mixture simmered then cooled before being emulsified it with oil. The result? A bright orange, homemade Peri-Peri sauce that’s just as good as Nando’s! After backpacking Asia, road tripping Europe and doing a bit of van life, we’re now exploring the world aboard our Leopard 45 catamaran.
