On January 1st, the Global Surveyor sailed from Funchal to Porto Santo, all sails up. A great way to spend the first day of 2024. The Madeira Island Fireworks were spectacular! We saw the possibly largest fireworks display in Europe right from the deck of Global Surveyor! Visiting Porto Santo with its golden beaches and turquoise waters and the Savage archipelago which is a recognised UNESCO site was simply a treat. @gowestsailing

Mount Ili Lewotolok is an active stratovolcano on Lembata Island in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Indonesia. It rises about 1,423 metres above sea level, and villages sit on its slopes and along the coast below. For these communities, Lewotolok is not just a mountain. It is part of daily life, local belief, and identity. 📍 Where is Lewotolok? Lewotolok is in the northern part of Lembata Island, in Lembata Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, eastern Indonesia. It lies between the Ile Ape and Ile Ape Timur districts. 🌋 Is Lewotolok still active? Yes. Lewotolok has recorded volcanic activity since the 1600s. It had a major eruption in November 2020, when thousands of residents were evacuated, and it has erupted regularly since then. In 2023, it was recorded as one of Indonesia’s most frequently erupting volcanoes. 🏡 What is it like to live next to an active volcano? In this series, local people share how they live alongside Lewotolok.
