The loft is based in Gosport, on the southern coast of the UK, and houses a number of global departments under one roof. These include Superyacht finishing and sail production for One Design and North Sails 3Di. As NorthSails’ European flagship facility, the loft enables North Sails to remain at the forefront of sail technology, innovation and manufacturing. Gosport is the first loft in the world to specialise in superyacht sails, and it’s gigantic raised floor – measuring 1,950m2 – is the largest ever built. A team of 9 designers and 82 staff members are aided by state-of-the-art technology and equipment, ensuring sails are delivered quickly, and safely – with no compromises in quality. The space is split into two manufacturing bays, and the main floor is designed to cater to superyacht sail finishing. Measuring 101x30m, the space can accommodate two J-Class headsails and a mainsail laid out simultaneously. The secondary bay is dedicated to One Design sailmaking and Certified Service sail care. The main idea behind the project was to bring to market a true “all-terrain” powercat, inspired by workboats and featuring an innovative design with asymmetrical hulls linked by a central foil capable of optimizing the equation that combines speed/consumption/passage though the water. The aluminum hulls are protected by impressive thick scantlings, and the welded parts throughout the deck are impressive. The 46 Explorer is fitted out in a somewhat rustic fashion, with a single, relatively spartan double cabin. However, a number of customization options, such as the fabric enclosure for the flybridge enhance the level of comfort. According to the manufacturer, at 20 knots, fuel consumption is reduced by 30%, giving a range of over 200 miles. It’s worth noting that despite the foiling design, the Vandal is still perfectly capable of taking the ground – you’re either an explorer or you’re not... A second 60-foot (18 m) model is currently under study.
