The third passage race of West Highland Yachting week 2022 from Tobermory to Oban once again provided some close racing at the first turning mark. The J109 BlueJay just got across the bow of the second J109 Going to Red. The they were closely followed by the 3rd J109 Salamander who was forced to go wide as the fast charging Sigma 400 Sunrise with no mark room decided to ignore the rules and gybe in side rather than luffing to keep clear. It was a little disappointing that Sunrise failed to do any penalty turns after breaking the rules, karma came to the rescue of the boats who followed the rules as Sunrise's kit wrapped around the forestay which allowed Salamander to luff up under them retaking 3rd place on the long run to Oban. BlueJay showed a clean pair feels leading from start to finish just beating Salamander to win the race, GTR learnt that polars are king when one design racing and learnt the hard way that low and slow is not the way to go when racing a J109 down wind. There was lots of tight racing across the whole week which made for a great regatta in the Scottish Highlands. The team at Bottom Up Boat hope you are enjoying the action from WHYW 2023.

If you’re going offshore, take NauticEd’s Safety at Sea Course to learn the critical storm, survival, and emergency skills you’ll need when things break and help is far away - https://www.nauticed.org/sailing-courses/view/safety-at-sea?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=CyPToQRpNVI The Safety at Sea Course is built for anyone going offshore—because offshore, you probably don’t even know what you don’t know. What do you do if your mast breaks and you’re 1,000 miles offshore? How do you outrun a storm? How do you repair a sail on a boat that’s rocking in storm conditions? We cover what to pack in a ditch bag, how to get in and out of a life raft, and how to rig a life raft so it’s accessible when you need it. We also cover flares (including how to operate them), helicopter rescue, and even how to steer without a rudder if something gets knocked off or breaks—whether it’s a whale strike, floating container, or another failure. There are dozens and dozens of topics covered in the Safety at Sea Course. If you’re going offshore, you absolutely need it. #sailingschool #offshoresailing #sailing #sailboat
