Swimming with whale sharks, the biggest fish in the ocean, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. In this video, one of our travellers shares the moment he slipped into the open blue waters of Indonesia and came face to face with these gentle giants. 🦈 What is a whale shark? The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is the largest fish in the world. Despite its huge size, it is a gentle filter feeder that eats plankton and small fish, and it is harmless to people. Whale sharks are easy to recognise by the pattern of white spots on their dark backs. 🌊 What is it like to swim with whale sharks? “There were quite a lot of firsts on this trip, but the one that will stay with me forever is the opportunity to swim with whale sharks.” Floating in the open ocean, straining to see anything in the blue, then suddenly a whale shark glides into view. As our traveller puts it, nothing really prepares you for being so close to the world’s biggest fish. They are the true definition of gentle giants. 🤝 How do you swim with whale sharks responsibly?
