► full test in Multihulls World N°193: https://www.multihulls-world.com/review/catamaran/gunboat-72-top-luxury-and-performance ► The Gunboat 72 had its first official presentation at Cannes, and was impossible to miss, with its mast towering over 100 feet (30 meters) above the carpeted pontoons! Slightly longer and beamier than the Gunboat 68 (a model approaching the end of its career), the new catamaran also boasts a larger nacelle and, above all, a vast flybridge - a first! The aim is to introduce a comfortable, fast and luxurious multiyacht into the Gunboat family. Obviously, the 72 remains a high-performance catamaran, capable of sailing at wind speed from 8 knots. Compared to the speedy 68, it weighs over 10 tons, despite extreme care in the choice of materials and build quality... but the sail plan gives the impression of being more powerful than that of the Gunboat 68 Racing – 3,100 square feet (288 m²) upwind versus 2,712 sq ft (252 m²), and 4,844 sq ft (450 m²) downwind versus 4,682 sq ft (435 m²). Note that accommodation layouts are designed according to the owner’s wishes. ► TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS: Builder: Gunboat Length: 72’2” (22 m) Waterline length: 72’2” (22 m) Beam: 30’10” (9.4 m) Draft: 5’7”/12’6” (1.7/3.8 m) Air draft: 106’2” (32.37 m) Light displacement: 62,600 lbs (28.4 t) Loaded displacement: 71,650 lbs (32.5 t) Mainsail area: 1,830 sq ft (170 m²) Solent: 1,270 sq ft (118 m²) A3 Spinnaker: 3,014 sq ft (280 m²) Fuel: 343 US gal (1,300 l) Water: 222 US gal (840 l) ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 500 multihulls tests! ► Las Palmas, almost an unavoidable stopover on the Atlantic route from Europe, welcomed thousands of sailors during the month of November, when the north-easterly trade winds begin to set in. These crews included a total of 1,300 sailors flying the ARC colors (ARC and ARC +) aboard 253 sailboats. During our visits to the pontoons, we got a measure of the Starlink revolution: only one entrant was equipped last year, compared with 80% of the fleet today... The quality of the connections offered by this satellite operator makes it possible to efficiently follow weather developments, keep in touch those ashore and even work as if at the office! For the first time since we’ve been following ocean-going crews, Vincent, aboard Outremer 51 Piment Rouge, will be sharing his transatlantic passage with us via his videos, which we’ll be relaying. Another special feature of this 2023 edition will be the large number of diesel cans strapped to the guardwires: in a context of very light winds, unusual for the season, the engines (authorized with a penalty for the Multihull category) are likely to be much in demand aboard many of the multihulls. After two weeks of seminars, meetings and safety inspections, the atmosphere on the docks was becoming truly electric during the last three days running up to the start. Studying the weather, stocking up on fresh supplies, washing fruit and vegetables - everyone realized that there was an ocean to cross... Some crew members are more Zen than others: the oldest sailor in the ARC, Joff Hutchinson, 89, declared: “I’ve been sailing for 82 years and I’ve always wanted to cross the Atlantic. Now that my sons have retired, there’s no better time”. The start was relaxed, with the fleet setting off in a light southerly breeze and glorious sunshine, guaranteeing a smooth start for everyone to get their sea legs. ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 500 multihulls tests!
