After sailing over 20,000 nm on our monohull ForTuna and 7,000 nm on the catamaran Zambezi, weโ€™re finally ready to share our honest opinion on the never-ending Catamaran vs Monohull debate. For this review, we compared both boats in 4 key aspects: 1๏ธโƒฃ Sailing performance on long passages A tie. The cat is faster, but needs way more wind to move. Moreover when sailing close-hauled, the main dominates and maneuvering in higher winds often requires the engineโ€™s help. 2๏ธโƒฃ Sailing comfort This one surprised us. Catamarans are shockingly uncomfortable once the sea starts moving. Each wave hits twice, the hulls slam, the rig creaks, and our bodies couldnโ€™t predict the motion. On a monohull, the movement is linear, predictable and our stomachs are much happier. 3๏ธโƒฃ Living comfort The cat wins. The space, light, and โ€œupper-level livingโ€ are unbeatable. But youโ€™ll also find it hard to hide from the sun. 4๏ธโƒฃ Maintenance Another tie. Double the hulls, double the engines, double the systems. Whatever you spend or fix on a monohull, double it for a catamaran. That said, redundancy can be a plus offshore. Our verdict: Weโ€™re staying on a monohull. The living space of a catamaran is tempting, but the sailing comfort just isnโ€™t for us. We plan to keep crossing oceans and weโ€™d rather live smaller than be seasick. Whatโ€™s your take on the cat vs mono debate? Stay salty, Greta & Michael ๐ŸŒŠ #sailing #sailboat #boatlifeโš“๏ธ #liveaboard #sailboatlife #sailingadventure
